Demetri Martin's Career

After graduating from Yale University and went to the NYU School of Law, Demetri Martin decided to drop out one year before his graduation and in 2001 he appeared on Comedy Central's stand up Premium Bland, this being his first big break in stand up comedy.

In 2003, Demetri Martin's stand up show If I... got him the Perrier award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the show became in 2004 a British television special. During this time, demetri Martin also wrote for Late Night with Conan O'Brien and in 2004 he appeared on Comedy Central Presents Demetri Martin, this being his first stand up comedy special.

Demetri Martin is best known for his work on The Daily Show, on which he started working since 2005, hosting a segment called Trendspotting, in which he talked about the hip trends among youth and in 2006, he returned as the new Youth Correspondent, with the segment Professional Important News with Demetri Martin.

In 2007, the comedian appeared again on The Daily Show and talked about the lawsuit Viacom started against YouTube and Google.

Demetri Martin's stand up comedy album These Are Jokes is the comedian's first CD/DVD set, which was released on September 26, 2006.

Some of the jokes included on Demetri Martin's stand up album These are Jokes, have appeared also on his Comedy Central Presents special and on his portion of the 2005 compilation Invite Them Up.

In May 2009, Demetri Martin's These Are Jokes stand comedy album was certified gold by the RIAA.

In 2007, Demetri Martin's Person stand up comedy show was filmed at Austin's Paramount Theatre, in front of a live audience and the video was released on September 4, the same year.

Demeri Martin's DVD Person includes extra feature, such as deleted scenes, commentaries with his family and some early gigs.

In 2007, the comedian appeared on HBO's Flight of the Conchords season finale, playing a keytar player and he also had a small role in The Rocker movie.

He also starred as a gay artist, in the Ang Lee film Taking Woodstock, which had the premiere at the Cannes Festival in 2009.

In 2009, Demetri Martin hosted and starred in his own Comedy Central television show, called Important Things With Demetri Martin and due to the success it had, the TV show was renewed for a second season by Comedy Central.

Demetri Martin is expected to play a supporting role in his movie Will, that he sold to DreamWorks, to appear in Young Americans film and also to play the lead part in Moon People pitch, that he sold to Columbia Pictures.

Demetri Martin's stand up comedy style is unconventional and unique, the comedian accompanying his jokes with drawing and singing.

On stage, Demetri Martin uses either a piano, guitar, harmonica, keyboard, tambourine and sometimes all at once.

Comedian Demetri said that Steven Wright was an important influence, but Martin's comedy style is clean and energetic, as a difference from Wright's style. Even though both comedian use deadpan one-liners, Demetri Martin's stand up comedy style is a perfect timed mix of music, observational humor and funny drawings.
